SCHOOL PICNIC.

ANNUAL EXCURSION TO ASHHURST.

The annual picnic excursion to the Ashhurst Domain was held by the local D. H. School yesterday, and was well attended. The weather, at the outset, was somewhat disappointing and a heavy shower was experienced just prior to the arrival of the train ait its destination. A warm westerly wind and the sun soon dried the ground, however, and conditions wei'e very pleasant during the afternoon. There was a slight decrease in the attendance, as compared with last year, hut, nevertheless, some five hundred children and parents availed themselves of the opportunity ol visiting the popular picnic domain and spent a most enjoyable day in the beautiful grounds. The outing was unmarred by mishap or misfortune of any kind and the excursion train which arrived back at 7 o’clock brought a full complement of happy, if somewhat tired children and adults.

'The Ashhurst people showed their consideration for the picnickers when the weather looked anything but pleasant in the morning by offering the committee accommodation in various shelters in the town and in this respect the committee desire to thank the Salvation Army for the offer of 'their ball and the Ashhurst Racing Club for placing the racecourse buildings at their disposal. The Railway Department also generously offered to make the excursionists as comfortable as possible under the threatening conditions. Wjoi’d was forwarded to Palmerston) North before the an’ival of the train at that station to apprise the committee of the conditions obtaining at the picnic ground and offers of tarpaulins were forthcoming on the aiTival of the train. Fortunately the weather took up almost immediately and the committee was not called upon to avail itself of the kind offers, made to them. A carter was in attendance at the station to attend to luggage transport, and at the grounds everything was in readiness. The caretaker (Mr. iHealtey) had hot water ready and there was no difficulty in obtaining milk or other requirements.

An early start was made with races and athletic events for the children, by /the teaching staff and willing assistants and a well-tho-ught-out and interesting programme of events kept the children and parents alike interested and busy the whole of the day. In this connection a special word of praise is due to Messrs C. Procter, T. Cihipper, 0. Doel, D. Scott and Burdes for the excellent manner in which they controlled the sports and the expeditious manner in which the events were got off. Several innovations were introduced, which caused a great deal of amusement, included in which were Iblindfold boxing, a bun-eating competition, pole pillow fighting, etc. The old boys’ race drew a good field, while a Ibaby show, judged by Mrs. Sea'bury, attracted hve entrants. The teachers proved themselves to he too good for the citizens in ji tug-of-war, winning two out of the three pulls. The teachers had a busy time attending to the' wants of the children but nothing was left to be desired in 'the catering line by Mrs. Walls. The committee, headmaster (Mr. V. A. Mason) and teaching staff are to he congratulated on the excellent manner in which the picnic was conducted. The sports resulted as follows : PRIMARY SCHOOL EVENTS CHAMPION SHIP S.
