THE TURKISH ALPHABET.

'The new . alphabet adopted in Turkey contains about 30 letters, .instead o'f some hundreds of characters, audits use is now compulsory in all public documents. “The only way in which the Turkish nation can overcome ignorance is through education, and this can be made possible only by a new alphabet,” said Mu staph a Kemal, in addressing the Grand Assembly. “The adoption of the new characters in the form of law will Constitute one of the greatest reforms in our struggle towards progress, and will assure the entrance of Turkey into the great family of the civilised peoples. The parliament responsible for its adoption will make for itself a privileged place, not only in Turkish history, but in that of the universe. The freeing of our compatriots from the bondage of ignorance will be a revolution which will give our. existence a new and exceptional vigour, .and mean the opening to Turkey of a new world of light.”
