LIFE SAVING DEMONSTRATION
, ♦- WANGANUI CHAMPION IN LOCAL BATHS. Despite the particularly cold night and not deterred by the fact that the baths were filled with fresh and very ('hilly artesian water only yesterday afternoon, Miss M. Lorens, of Wanganui, iwho is at present on holiday in Foxton as the guest of Rev. and Mrs. W. H. Nicholas, and who is an expert in life-saving and swimming, gave a demonstration in the local baths last evening. There was a fair attendance of the pulblic present to witness the exhibition but a large number stayed away under the impression that owing to the cold Miss Herons would postpone the exhibition until another night. As exhibition of land drill was given first in which Miss Pereas demonstrated methods of releasing a drownisg person’s grip on the rescuer while she also demonstrated her efficiency in resuscitation work.
Miss M. Barron acted as the patient and at the conclusion of the land drill she plunged into the baths to be “rescued” by Miss . Ferens. Miss Ferens aptly demonstrated her ability to handle a drowning person and went through the five methods of rescue. At the conclusion she! gave an exhibition of breast stroke swimming, the propeller, plunge and float and roll all of which were carried out with neatness and grace. At the conclusion of the demonstration the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau) thanked Miss Ferens for her very instructive and interesting' ■exhibition and congratulated her on her pluck in entering the water on such a cold night. Miss Ferens was accorded a round of applause from the spectators.
