ANNUAL FIXTURE CONCLUDES
PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP TO SIR ROY.
SURPRISE VICTORY BY MALLAIS.
Brilliantly .fine weather —the sun being uncomfortably warm —prevailed for the concluding day of the Foxton Racing Club’s annual fixture, on Thursday, when there (was again an excellent attendance of the public. Betting was again brisk and, compared with the .offday of twelve months ago, an increase of £1616 was recorded, which made a total increase for the two days of £4242, the aggregate being £31,159, as compared with £26,917 for 1928. A weaker field was presented in the President's Handicap—the principal event for the day—than was produced in the Cup content on the opening day, Nightmarch being again an absentee, while Blimp, Toxenma, Tori, Kilmiss, Lady Limond arid Maui did not compete. It was, nevertheless, an interesting contest, Twink, last year’s Cup winner, making a bold effort to bring about tile downfall of the favourite. Sir Roy, but without success. The consistent Royal Came occupied third berth with Kalos once again in fourth place, the Boniform gelding being Awapuni’s sole representative in the event.
A big surprise was forthcoming in the Wharangi Handicap—the open sprint contest for the day—when Millais, who ranked but three tickets higher in the betting order than the extreme outsider of the field, Ilelotis, won by a length from the latter with the favoured pair, Epistle and Callanmore, filling third and fourth places in a four-horse race. An attractive item on yesterday’s programme was the Carnarvon Hack Cup a trophy valued at 20 sovs being attached to the winner’s stake, and the success of Balloon—a Foxtontrained animal —proved quite popular, although he ranked as* one of the little fancied division. DELUGE IMPROVES.
Six runners went to the post in the Piaka Hack Hurdles, Rouen and Arkansas failing to fulfill their engagements. On the strength of his first day’s performance Deluge (£375) came in for increased support, the chestnut winding up favourite from Rash (£326) and Hymestrason. Rash again acted as pacemaker over the early portion from Lin Arlington and Hymestrason with the favourite running well forward. The leader stopped quicker than usual and at the five furlong post Hymestrason outjumped the Bisogne gelding to assume charge from Rash and Lin Arlington. Round the turn for home Lin Arlington deposed Hymestrason, Delugo also making a forward move, and both Hymestrason and Rash steadily drifted. In the run home Deluge finished a shade too strong for Lin Arlington although the Acre gelding made quite a favourable showing, a length separating them at the post. Roburant came “from the clouds” over the last bit to take third placing a length and a-half back with another gap to Rash and Hymestrason. DISRANK WINS AT LAST. The defection of Alholspear, Gambler and Sambur left 11 runners to go to the post in the Motuili Maiden Race and the public went strongly for the uncertain Disrank (£537) who had only shown fair form in his earlier career, with Bione (£341) and Snowshoe (£197), who had run good races on the previous day, next in demand. Degree was smartest to begin at the rise of the barrier to lead Bione, Snowshoe, Barsaloma and Disrank along the back and round the turn for home, there being little change in the leading division, Bione had taken charge at the straight entrance from Disrank and Snowshoe, hut under pressure Disrank finished on to win nicely by a length from Bione, with Snowshoe m third place a length and a-half back—the public’s selections having proved to be correct Degree was fourth with Otauru Lass, who was last to turn for home, ahead ot Fallow and Fine Aero. SIR ROY’S GOOD EFFORT. The withdrawal of Nightmarch again caught ante post bettors astray, while the field was further weakened by Blimp declining bis engagement. In the absence of the aforementioned pair, Sir Roy, the stable companion of Nightmarch, was backed down to odds-on, the southerner being entrusted with 779 tickets, there bein»’ a substantial drop to Bright Day (£321) and Kalos (£300). Roya Game jumped to the front when the held was sent away on its mission and the Royal Stag gelding was a length clear pf Kalos and Bright Day as they turned into the back straight, with Twink and Sir Roj on close terms and Discourse last. Rounding the bottom turn Twink, Sir Roy arid Discourse all moved forward and the trio turned for homo in behind Royal Game. The leader could not, however, retain lus position in the run to the post, Sir Roy prevailing over Twink, who was the outsider of the field by a short neck with Royal Game a length back. Kalos was another length back with Discourse ahead of British Day who failed bis backeis ba<lly * TENACRE WINS AGAIN. . All nine acceptors went to the post in the Whirokino Nursery Handicap, an even betting race finding Acrodity (£328) preferred to Royal Lino (£318) and Tenacre (£313). Kentish Lady jumped to the iront on the tapes being released to lead Greenfield and Tenacre to the turn where tapestry joined Kentish Lady and lenacie in the lead with Acrodity and Greenfield in behind. The leading trio fought cut the issue in the run to the finishing point, Tenacre staying on the better to win by a length from Kentish Lady who had a half length advantage, over Tapestry. Greenfield was .fourth with Acrodity and Bon Acre next to finish. A POOR FIELD.
The poor field of four horses was presented in the Wharangi Handicap—the open sprint race for the day Miss Pat and Lady Limond being defections. Epistle (£721) was backed down to a very snort, price, Callanmoro (£454) being preferred to Millais (£159). with Holotis (£156) the outsider of the field. Callanmoro and Hclotis jumped to the front at the barrier rise but the latter steadily forged ahead and was still in the van from Callanmorc and Millais as they approached the straight the favourite being still m the rear. Helotis was still holding the advantage over Millais at the distance, but the latter unfolded a good finishing effort to get up and win by a length from Holotis, with Callanmoro and Epistle at similar intervals. It was a severe blow to the PUbllC ' BALLOON STAYS ON. Dormod was the solo defection from the Carnarvon Hack Cup in which the first day’s winner, Gold Cure (£627), was backed' with confidence. Mister Gamp (£326) and Henna (£213) being next in request. An indifferent jump out saw Gold Cure and Bissau lead Boundary racing to the turn going away from home and the hrst named took command after two furlongs had been traversed from Boundary, Bissac, Balloon, Mister Gamp, Royal Black Aurora Borealis and Henna, with Kilorcll bunging up the rear. Rounding the turn Henna and Kilorcll commenced to move up, but RoundaiV, Gold Cure and Balloon were still clear at the straight entrance. Balloon displayed bis staying powers when he drew out over the final pinch to win by three lengths from Henna, who came strongly from the distance, with Boundary half a length back. I hen in a bun'ch came Bissac, Kilorcll, Mister uamp. Royal Black and Gold Cure, the favourite finish. „„, Monaghan (£557) and Mam (£525) dominated the market in the Moutoa Handicap in which Blorsalene was a defection, and the pair fought out the issue, the favourite prevailing by a bare head. MonaMian assumed the role of pacemaker from the barrier rise, being attended by Maui, Beaumont and Vigilance with Wilderness bringing up the rear. The leading pair were well clear of Vigilance and Beaumont as they approached the straight, Wilderness having been eased up as the result of a recurrence of the blooding troubles Ifo which he is addicted, and they fought out the issue all the way. Maui had a slight advantage 50 yards from home, but Monaghan answered a further call on the part of his rider to get up and snatch victory by a head with Vigilance, who came fast from the turn, a length away. There was another short gap t|o Beaumont.
A LONG PRICE TO FINISH. • Proceedings were brought to a close with (he Rangiotu ITttck 1-Jtuulincp in which there v.ore seven runner-', Greenfield having started earlier in the day. Warfille, who had won the previous day, was preferred by the public, the Warplane marc, being entrusted with 735 tickets 1/8 moio than White Ringlet—with a marked drop to Volplane (£280). Atbolspear, from .the inside position, was fiesl cut, but almost immediately gavo wav to First Ruler and Sambur. The favourite, did not enjoy the best (of runs going down the back and was bringing up the rear as the field turned for Dome, Sambur and Volplane being ahead of First Ruler and White Ringlet with Warfille making another effort, to got up. Positions again underwent changes approaching the entrance Volplane going to the front, from White Ringlet and Atholspear with Warfille m|oving up fast,. Although White Ringlet compounded inside the distance, Atbolspear luing on to boat Warfille by half a length with Volplane beaten into third place a length back. White Ringlet was fourth with Land Guard next. THE DETAILED RUNNERS. PAIAKA HACK HURDLES, of 130 sovs.; second horse 20 sovs. and third 10 spvs. One mile and five furlongs. 1 Mr H. B.
