THE BULL’S BRIDGE.
The District Highways Council notified the Manawatu County Council at yesterday’s meeting that it could not accept the latest proposal of the Manawatu and Rangilikei County Councils that a subsidy of £4 for £1 be paid on the cost of the new Bulls bridge provided that the Highways Board, iipaddition, took over 80 per cent, of the loans raised by the County Councils for the present kludge for the remainder of the term of such loans. The Board had noted that the County Councils recommended that the new bridge be erected in reinforced! concrete throughout. The Rang-itikei County Council notified that a seven days’ tally of traffic over the bridge had revealed that 4652 cars and 1855 other traffic had; made use of the structure — total 6507. This was nearly double the tally taken in June last and the difference between the two tallies could be accounted for by traffic j from outside the two counties. The chairman (Mi 1 . W. E. Barber) observed that after these Agues the Highways Board, ought to build the bridge without any contribution from the counties. The Council passed a resolution expressing dissatisfaction with the attitude taken by the Highways Council.
