HIGHWAYS TRAFFIC.
COUNTY INSPECTOR’S RECOMMENDATIONS. At yesterday’s Manawatu County Council meeting, the county inspector reported that a large volume of traffic passed over the county roads during the holidays. There were two accidents, one, which ended fatally, on the main Foxton-Sanson load and another one at the corner of Sanson-Foxton highway and Speedy’s line. While dealing with the motor traffic I would like to suggest to the council the desirability of getting permission from property owners to allow the roadmen in the different ridings, to cut hack hedges and trees where they are likely to obstruct the view of motorists at corners and cross-roads. I have discussed the matter with Mr. Bond and he is of opinion that it could be easily carried out. Under the Act the council is required to give two months’ notice in writing before any action can he taken to compel an owner to cut hack same. A fair amount of gorse’ and lupin has been cut during the past, month. I am nenv concentrating on the blackberry nuisance and will issue summonses where persons have not complied with the notices sent out requiring them to clear up same. “I have wondered if the v time has not-arrived when we as a County Council should take some action to save lives,” observed the chairman. “It is a terrible thing Jhat-Jxees should he allowed to exist when they obscure the view of car drivers.” The remainder of the Council agreed and the traffic inspector was instructed to make a report on the various corners that needed attention.
