VETERAN OF THE MAORI WARS
CELEBRATES 92nd BIRTHDAY. Auckland, January 6. The only living man who won the New Zealand Cross during the Maori Wars is Rowley Hill, of fakapuna, who celebrated his ninetysecond birthday to-day. He isji familiar ' figure at all ceremonial ga,therings when veterans wear their medals, as lie has a whole breastof them for exploits both on land and sea. All Governors for years past have known him, because no -one Could pass <a man ivith such a show of decorations. He is a small museum in himself. 'Some time last year lie had a bad turn, bu!t these old sailors and soldiers are tough morsels, and “Rowley,” as he .is generally known, is still answering the breakfast bell with unfailing regularity. Yesterday interning he went down to the beach, and though lie did not '-take a header, he did have a paddle, which is more than most people of 90 would care to do.
