A STRANGE ANIMAL
NEW GUINEA FIND. An extraordinary zoological discovery by Prospector Mackreth in the piountaiiis above Edie Creek, New Guinea, confirms" a report ■made two years ago by Mr. R- M. Glass'on of the existence of a large carnivorous animal, probably a marsupial. Mr. Glasson saw tracks like those of a child’s feet, but with three toes. He followed these, he said, and shot an animal with carnivorous canine teeth and dark brown soft fur. It was of bear-like appearance, and had a long prehensile yellow tail. It attacked viciously before being killed. The colouring was much the same as that of a large tree kangaroo. Makretli says that it probably preys on the tree kangaroos and opossums. He photographed the body of the animal, and kept the skin. Others say that they have seen. the.animal, ivhich inhabits the upper mountains. The discovery of the hones of a large animal, now extinct, is also reported. These are being kept for classification.
