Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1928 CHRISTMAS GREETINGS.

BEFORE another'issue of the Herald reaches our readers, Christinas will have passed into the records that are gone. We therefore take this opportunity to "extend greetings and good wishes to all. May happiness brighten every home and joy abound. May the cloud of sorrow or disappointment be dispelled by the sunshine of a glorious hope in Him whose nativity we are about to celebrate. 0 * 0 * To communicate happiness to others should be uppermost in every heart —and there are plenty of opportunities offering in this connection. # * * * The recent depression may reduce the spending power of many wage-earners, but the outlook for the future is particularly bright and with this in mind the kiddies will not be denied the customary gifts associated with the season. Unmusical sounds will, as usual, usher in Christmas morn to be followed by the usual feasting. In the latter connection “may good digestion wait on appetite and health on both.” * * # * Touching Christmas re-unions let us quote Dickens: — “How many families whose members have been dispersed and scattered, far and wide, in the restless struggles of life, are then re-united, and meet once again in that happy state of companionship and mutual good-will which is a source of such pure and unalloyed delight, and one so incompatible with the cares and sorrows of the world, that the religious belief of the most civilized nations, and the rude traditions 'of the roughest savages, alike number it among the first joys of a future condition of existence provided for the blest and happy! How many old recollections, and how many dormant sympathies, does Christmas time awaken !” # •* . * # The serious illness of His Majesty King George has caused a feeling of anxiety among the millions of his loyal subjects throughout the Empire but the latest bulletins have indicated a turn for the better and these glad tidings will add to the rejoicings of thei festive season. To one and all we extend best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.
