CHRISTMAS GIFTS.
No summary of Christmas joys would be complete without a reference to the Christmas Day and Boxing Day custom of giving gifts. Originally this was probably a Roman New Year custom and the 'gifts between private citizens on the kalends of January, seem to have been intended as a magical way of securing a lucky year. The day /after Clmstutos became the happy day for dependants and poor people of a parish, when contents of the church alms box were distributed, but “Boxing Day” ,cau hardly have originated from this custom since the name originated much earlier.
Whatever the origin of the custom of Christmas giving it is a royal and a Christian one, especially when the gift is bestowed upon the needy and lonely-hearted, and •those who can give nothing but love and gratitude in return. Finally, long may the vogue of time-honoured 'Santa Claus and the Christmas stocking remain supreme in the home for parents and children alike at Christmas time.
