IN FIGHTING MOOD
SALUTARY FINES FOR ASSAULT. Palmerston N., December 17. Found guilty on tAvo charges of assault and also of using indecent language, SteAvart. Byrne, a wellknown boxer, was fined in the Magistrate’s Court tg-day a total of £ls 15s. Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., was on the bench. Mr. G. C. Petersen appeared on behalf of accused. ' ■! . Senior Sergeant Whitehouse, who conducted the case for the police, said accused had been at a dance with Harry Casey on the evening of November 17. FolloAving a remark by Frank Price Avhich Avas resented, accused pushed Price up against a Avail and hit him several times in the face. This Avas when the language Avas used. As accused was about six feet high and Price was only a small fellow, the latter did nothing. Bruce Maybrick Scorgie separated the tAvo, but accused saw him later and knocked him down. On this occasion Byrne had had some liquor. He Avas probably excited and lost his head. Accused Avas fined £2 and costs 10/- for using the indecent language. He Avas further fined £5 on each of the two assault charges and costs £3 5/-.
