MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Manawatu County Council met at Sanson on Tuesday, Cr. W. E. Barber presiding. There were also present. Crs. W. B. Pearce, H. H. Hunt, and D. W, R<yd. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: — From-the Department of Agriculture relative to the council’s request that the protection on hares be removed and advising that this is a matter for the Department, of Internal Affairs. The Agricultural Department was however obtaining a report on the existence of hares in the Manawatu county. —Received. From the Public Works Department, giving authority for the council to proceed with the base course work on the Awahuri-Mt. iStewart highway on the same basis subsidy, '£3 for £1 as that on which the present work is being done. —Received. From Foxton Borough Council, asking if the council would donate £5 towards the cost of maintaining the Foxton public, cemetery. — Agreed to. and a similar grant is to be made to the Rongotea cemetery. From the Foxton Chamber of Commerce, thanking the chairman and council for the manner in which it has always employed local men on its highway works and also expressing appreciation of the fact that an early start was to be made with the highway work in the dis-trict.-—The letter was received. The chairman remarked .that it was not often the council received letters of appreciation. From Mr. J. Linklater, M.P., advising that he would do everything possible to obtain a grant for the metalling of Hammond’s road. — Received.
From H. Hartley, Manawatu Heads, in reference to the clearing of sand from Langley’s corner. — The chairman said that the position was bad,' a sand drift was .Avorking right across the road from the beach. The an-angement made with Mr. Hartley was for him to do the Avork in lieu of payment of rates. HoAvever, the position was becoming acute and Mr. Hartley’s request for a payment of £5 per annum in addition to relief from rate payments Avas reasonable and a cheap way of keeping the road open. -The council agreed with the chairman. From ,J. Legg, of Foxton, applying for a transfer of his slaughtering license to Dorset and Riches of Foxton. —Agreed to. * SANSON TRAMWAY. The tramway manager reported that the chief items of traffic for November were: —Grain 14$ tons, minerals and manure 142$ tons, general merchandise 35 tons, stock 11 trucfes, metal 316 trucks, wool 19 bales, eggs 166 crates, timber 5,500 super feet and fares 10/11. The accounts slioav a debit balance of £32 14/7 for the month’s Avorking.—Received. ALTERATIONS TO RATE ROLL. The following alterations Avere made on the rate roll: —‘J. A. and E. F. Sanson to D. G. Short, sec. 56 toAvnship of Carnarvon; F. J. Fraser to E. J. Bowater, lot 266 town of Sanson; iS. J. Teaz to K. A. W. Trenkner, pt. sec. 158 Rongotea; A. W. Hamlin to C. S. and H. Hamlin, lot 7 pt. secs. 72 and 73 Carnarvon; E. H. Homan Esq. to F. W. Dorset and J. F. Riches, lot 3 pt. see. 265 Foxton. RATE COLLECTOR’S REPORT. The county rate collector reported that since the last meeting of . the council £553 4/6 of general rates had been paid leaving £5571 14/5 still outstanding. Arrears of general rates amounting to £93 14/7 had been paid during the same period.—Received. COUNTY INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The county inspector (Mi-. W. Berry) reported as follows: —Fanprogress has been made with the cutting of lupins and gorsei growing on the roadsides. Final notices are noAV being posted to those Avho have failed to make any effort to cut doAvn same. The domes have been put in at Awahuri cross-roads and sign, boards in accordance with the regulations have been erected. The domes at iSanson cross-roads will be attended to as soon as possible. Four persons Avere brought before the Foxton Court last Court day - and fined 10/- and costs each for allowing stock to wander. —Received. THE RIVER CUT SCHEME. A report similar to that submitted to the local Borough Council meeting on Monday evening (see page 4 of this issue) in reference to the river cut scheme of the ManaAvatuOroua River Board Avas read. Cr. Hunt: It looks as if they are after some of Sir Joseph Ward’s £70,000,000. The chairman (Cr. Barber): That’s what they are after, alright. Cr. Pearce thought it would be a good thing for the representatives appointed to impress on the new Government the necessity for a subsidy towards the work. Cr. Hunt: The work simply cannot be done Avithout a Government subsidy. The chairman pointed out that the proposals of the commission placed a heavy additional burden on land that was already rated for the work. FolloAving a brief discussion Crs. Boyce and Hunt were appointed to represent the council at the conference. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr. H. V. Bond) reportel as follows: MAIN HIGHWAYS MAINTENANCE. The Sanson-Himatangi road has
been graded and is now being patched. Grading and patching* has been carried out on the HimatangiRangiotu road. The Foxton-Hima-tangi and Foxton beach roads haA-o been graded. The Whirokino road has been graded and cleaned up since the flood waters. haA r e receded. The Foxton-Shannon road has been graded and a considerable amount of silt has been removed from the punt approaches. Fox-ton-Himatangi.—Tenders for the re-construction of 5 miles of this road has been called. HimatangiRangiotu.— The deviations have been surveyed and the Avliole plans are noAV complete and ready for printing. The necessary copies will be foi-Avarded to the Main Highways Board Avithout delay. TramAvay.—The usual difficulty of high grass is being experienced along the track. An attachment has been made to one of the trucks by which it is hoped to cut down a great deal of this nuisance. The usual Aveeding and repairs have been earned out. Crusher. —A total of 1606 cubic yards of metal have' been handled during November. The 2-inch centrifugal pump has been connected up with the Avater supply system and is a great improvement. The Drag-line mast has been erected and evefything is in readiness for the installation of the winch Avliich should be at the crusher any day noAV. —Received.
