FOXTON-HIMATANGI HIGHWAY.
COUNTY COUNCIL’S OPERATIONS. • •, ' ? GROUP TENDERS TO BE CALLED. In conversation with the chairman of the Manawatu County Council (Mr. W. E. Barber) we are informed that the tenders received for the Foxton-Himatangi highway construction, preparatory to sealing, were, in excess of the estimate. Mr. Barber said probably the job was too big for the smaller contractors to consider. The Council recommended to the Highways Board that the work be undertaken bv the Council and this the Board has agreed to. The Council has therefore instructed its engineer (Mr. Bond) to carry out the work in sections to meet the convenience of contractors.
The engineer has lost no time in putting the work in hand. Specifications are now ready and tenders are now invited for the work, which should absorb any local unemployed able-bodied men. Cutting the work up as is being done the engineer informs us, will enable groups of workmen with scoops and teams of horses, to tender.
With men and material offering the Foxton-Himatangi highway will present a hive of industry at no distant date. Some time will elapse before the surface sealing is carried out.
We were also informed that tenders have been accepted for surface sealing ten miles of highway between Sanson and Mt. Stewart. The largest hot mix plant in the Dominion will be established at the Awahuri bridge near the boundaries of the Kairanga and Manawatu counties.
The Manawatu County Council is to be complimented upon its determination to push on with the main and subsidiary highways under its jurisdiction.
