DISMISSED AUCKLAND NURSE

TO BE RE-INSTATED. Auckland, Last Night. Strong comment upon the violation of secrecy ordinarily observed regarding letters placed in the post for delivery was made by members of the Auckland Hospital Board tonight, when Nurse E. A. Blac-kie, who was recently dismissed by a special committee for writing to a prisoner in Mount Eden gaol after he had been a patient at the hospital, appeared before the Board with tho request that her case should be re-considered. After hearing the contents of Miss Blackie’s written explanation, members declined to take the responsibility of punishing her. This attitude was adopted on thei ground that the document forwarded by her to the prisoner should never have been placed in the hands of the medical superintendent, Dr. C. E. Maguire, and it Avas decided that provided Nurse Blackie made an apology to the matron, Miss A, Taylor, about Avhom she admitted making a rather indiscreet statement, she should be reinstated in her fonner position.

Dr. Maguire said the letter Avas shoAvn toi him by a person from the gaol. Mr. J. Dempsey, a member of the Board, said whoever showed the letter to Dr. Maguire committed a serious breach of the postal regulations.

Mr. J. Coyle, another member, said the nurse merely said the matron Avas “soft” and the matron took exception to that. “I suppose if she had called her a hard old thing, the matron Avould haA r e taken it as a compliment,” he said. “We cannot blame the girl for an indiscretion and if the Board punishes her for it, her Avhole life Avilt be blighted.” The resolution that the nurse be reinstated, provided she apologised to the matron, was carried unanimously.
