Captain Bert Hinkler has been commanded to Buckingham Palace where it is understood that the King will personally confer the Air Force Cross on the noted Australian flier.

A painful accident befel Mr. W. Kruse while engaged in grubbing lupins on Mr. F. S. Easton’s property on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Kruse was using a sharp spade for the work and it slipped and cutting through the boot of his left foot severed the top of one toe and badly gashed another at the joint. A fire which broke out on Tuesday afternoon destroyed a slxrpomed house and contents, on the Koputaroa end of the Foxton Rd. The building was owned by Mr. W. Eparaima, of Foxton, and was in the occupation of Mr. Patrick Leahy, who was acting as caretaker. Mr. Leahy was at a neighbour’s place at about half-past one, when he noticed smoke issuing from the house. He hurried to the scene, but found that the interior was flames, and he was unable to save anything. The building and a quantity of furniture and effects were a total loss. There was an insurance of £3OO on the house and £IOO on the contents, both policies being in the Phoenix office.
