SERIOUS CHARGE.
ACCUSED ACQUITTED. Mr. Justice Smith is presiding at the quarterly sittings of the Supreme Court which commenced in Palmerston North on Tuesday. The only criminal case set down for hearing.was that of Robert Me Donkey, carpenter, of Feilding, against whom a charge of indecent assault was preferred and, as a true bill was brought in by the grand jury at the last sessions of the Supreme Court at Palmerston (yesterday's trial was w new one ordered by the Appeal Court), the services of another grand jury were not required. His Honour directed that the court should be cleared during the hearing, and made an order forbidding the publication of evidence. The morning was taken up in the hearing of evidence, after which counsel (Mr. Cooke for the Crown and Mr. Cooper for accused) addressed the jury. The jury retired at 3 p.m. returning after a short retirement with a verdict of “not guilty,” and McConkey left the box a free man.
