FLOOD DAMAGE.
There is still a considerable nraount of flood water lying on the Moutoa and Whirokino districts and feed in these localities will be very scarce until the autumn. A very disagreeable odour is now arising from the decaying vegetation in the inundated^areas. The Foxton-Levin road, although still under water is now passable provided care is exercised in negotiating the flooded portions of the highway. The banks are responsible for the water hanging about the Moutoa and Whirokino so long and another flood gate and drain would prove very useful in clearing these areas of flood water. The banks were cut some time ago at Duck Creek and this greatly relieved the pc-nt up waters. A drop of a foot a day was noticed the first two days after the cuts were made. The banks, however cannot be cut too low and a considerable amount of water will still have to find other means of access into the river.
