The usual “run” of elvers has been noticed in the Mokau River recently, and old residents state that an unbroken string was coming up from the sea for a couple of days last week. It is the biggest seen in the last 20 years. The young cels are from lin. to 2in. in length and are milky white. Like their older brethren they have remarkable longevity out of water, living for two days or more out of their natural element.
