MR. McMANAWAY’S CANDIDATURE.
AN INDEPENDENT. TO DEFEAT THE REFORM CANDIDATE. The following letter from Mr. H. J. D. McManaway was published in the Manawatu Herald on April 24th, 1928: “Sir. —In the ‘Dominion’ of Saturday last appeared a list of candidates for the next general election supported by the United Political Organisation. My name appeared in that list for the Manawatu seat. “In order that there will be no misunderstanding later, I wish to state that I am not a member of 'any political party. lam standing as an Independent candidate (pledged to no party, class or creed. The organiser of the United Party knows this. Thousands of electors in New Zealand to-day are looking for a party to come forward Avith a progressive policy and a strong leader, and later should the United Party bring doAvn a policy of that nature they Avill not lack strong support. Should the United Party’s policy conform with the aboA-e I may be found supporting them, but until such can be ■known I prefer to remain an Independent candidate. I realise, that in order to defeat the Reform candidate for Manawatu electorate, I must the support of electors Avho have belonged to all political parties, therefore I am grateful for the support of the United party.” Yours, etc., H. J. D. McMANAWAY.
