WINE’S SOLILOQUY.
I am the spirit of strong drink, And Denton is my name; I am a menace to mankind, To life, and wealth, and fame. I am ai foe to truth and right, I fetter liberty; What freedom have the old or young, That are enslaved by me. I view the lands upon this globe, Arrayed in Nature’s best; Where countless beings are by me, With woe and want distrest. I view the sea —the rolling deep, So glorious and wide; How many of my victims rest, ‘Beneath its surging tide. New Zealand —thou Pacific gem, Remove my blight from thee; And show to all afflicted lands, A glad Dominion free. Bacchus, my God, renounce thy throne, The world awakens wide; 'The evil sway through ages past, ■Shall both our fates decide. — C. M. Georgeson.
