ALCOHOL BAD FOR THE NATION AND INDIVIDUAL.
The French economist, Charles Gide, has said: “Alcohol acts as a cultural solvent for all that is'bad in a nation, multiplying tendencies to crime, suicide, lunacy, violence, and, above all, laziness. This statement is borne out by what appears in the records of the Dominion of New Zealand. At least one-fourth of the crime in the Dominion is due to drink. Every week, on the average, one child is taken from the care of parents and put under the care of the State because of the drinking habits of either father or mother, or both. Every uinth day, one man or woman is admitted to a mental hospital, the accepted basis of whose mental derangement is alcoholism. Thus the friends of Jesus surely hear a command of His in regard to this trade when they hear Him say, “Every plaut which my Heavenly Father hath not planted shall he rooted up.” Foxton electors, will you not assist? —Advt.
