MAKING A MOCKERY OF DEMOCRACY.
When the electors of New Zealand east their votes at the last election, they little thought that they are sending to Parliament many representatives who had pledged themselves —before election — to work in the interests of a minority faction, thereby,disregarding/the wishes of the majority of their constituents. Yet that such was the ease has been amply proved on the floor of the House.
'These politicians, with two or three exceptions, proved themselves by their actions, to be willing toois of the NeAV Zealand Alliance (Prohibition Party). ‘They danced to the bidding of their- masters, Acting as the Alliance Avishes, and not as their constituents desired. Just liOAv brazen-faced in its methods the Alliance is can be gauged from the fact that, not content Avitli extorting pledges from various members, it actually dealt with the representatives of the people in the lobby Avlien the licensing question Avas before the House.
The introduction of trickery and subterfuge so characteristic of American politics will be deplored by every thinking NeAV Zealander, Avho will recognise here a menace to his rights and privileges. The most satisfactory Avay to counter such insidious tactics is to solidly vote for'. Continuance. — Advt. 5.
