FOXTONIANS ABROAD.
Writing from London under date September 13th, Mr. A. Alsop who, with Mrs. Alsop, is on a tour of the Old Land, the Continent and Australia, writes as follows: “We are having a very nice time sight-seeing. Mrs. Alsop and myself are keeping well ever since we left New Zealand. We had a very nice trip via Panama. We left Wellington on March 18th and arrived at Southampton on April 26th, and London the same day. We never missed a meal all the way so you can imagine we kept well. It was not so, however, with all the passengers. With sports, pictures, concerts, etc., we enjoyed every minute of the voyage. We stayed five weeks in London for a start. It is a great city and .so many places of interest to go to. The N.Z. House is a very nice building, and the High Commissioner's stall cannot do enough for you, directing one to different places of interest. We attended Sir James and Lady Parr’s afternoon tea on the 22nd of May by invitation. We met there Sir Joseph Ward, the Hon. McKenzie, Sir W. Hall-Jones and a great number of New Zealanders. It was a very sociable afternoon. After five weeks in London we went on a seven weeks’ tour of England and Scotland and had a lovely time. We event to the Highlands of Scotland, to the Island of Skye in the west. The country is a garden right through. We had very good weather. The roads are splendid and the ’buses we enjoyed very much. After arriving buck and resting in London we went to Paris for a week. Paris is a gay place. Wie visited all the places of note and went on several sight-seeing trips per Cook’s. The weather was good. It is a common thing now to hear of people swimming the Channel, there have been several this summer. We visited the Isle of White and took a ’bus ride round the island —78 miles. There ate some very pretty places on the island. The Cows Regatta was on and the King and Queen were there. 1 saw the King on his yacht at a distance. The regatta was the big week of the year. We visited Kent and the hop fields, Canterbury Cathedral and other very old and historical places. I called on Mr. and Mrs. F. Bryant, brother of Mr. R. Bryant, Foxton, and Mr. Geo. Huntley’s mother and sister. We are leaving London for Australia via Suez on the 13th of October, by the Orford, 20,000 tons. We will be staying in Australia. about two months. Kindly remember us to all the school staff and committee and Foxton friends.”
