TIMARU TO CHRISTCHURCH ROAD RACE.

WON BY B. W. ARNST. Christchurch, October 6. The traditional nor-wester prevailed for the Timaru-Christchurch road race to-day. There were many patches of loose shingle, with clouds of dust rising on parts of the road between Ashburton and Christchurch. The limit men got away sharp to time at 9.5 a.m., and it was 3.25 p.m. when the winner entered the show ground, to the accompaniment of a burst of cheering. The winner was B. W. Arnst, who won the big amateur road race last Saturday, but was disqualified for allegedly accepting a motor pace. In the race to-day he could find no one who would ride fast enough to please him, and for practically the whole journey he rode alone. He is a young rider, who will be heard of as his famous uncles, Jack and Dick Arnst, were in thenday. Fastest time was made by S. W. McCann (New Plymouth), who, like Arnst, had to make his own pace. Turning into Lincoln Road he showed an amazing burst of speed, 27 miles an hour, to ride in alone in fifth place. The placings of the first twelve men home were: — B. W. Arnst (40min.), 6hr. 12 min. 49sec. 1 M. Fass (50min.), 6hr. 27min. 9sec. 2 'A. C. Hill (37min.), 6hr. 14min. 12sec. 3 H. Crofts (50min.), 6hr. 27min. 13see. 4 S. W. Griggs (50min.), 6hr. 30min. 42sec. 8 C. Austin (scr.), shr. 42min. 17 sec. 9 H. W. Birch (38min), 6hr. 22min. 20s.ee. 10 E. W. Hubbard, Ashburton (50 min), fihr. 35min. 17sec. 11 W. R. M. Gooch, Hokitika (38 min.), 6hr. 24min. 29sec. 12 Immediately after the finish a protest was lodged against Arnst on the ground he entered for the race after entries were closed. The protest was dismissed.
