“BACK FROM THE DEAD.”
London, October 3. The Daily Mail reveals an astonishing “back from the dead’ case. C. H. Peachey, an ex-soldier, returned to his home in Gloucester after having vanished for ten years. Peachey served with the Second Battalion of the Gloucestershires in France and Salonika, and was hit on the head while with a tank corps in .A metal plate was put in to replace the frontal bone. Peachey, who was discharged disabled, joined a steamer for Portland Maine, as a coal trimmer. He went ashore at Maine and disappeared, and was entered as a deserter. His family advertised throughoui the country, but there was no response. Meanwhile Peachey’s mind was a complete blank. Wandering in Portland he was admitted to a mental hospital, where he remained for ten years, unable to account for himself. Several head operations were performed. The final one, upon his nose, led to his memory gradually being completely restored.
Peachey returned to England to find strangers occupying his home. His mother was dead, and his wife had re-married and had four children.
His brother, who was partially deaf and dumb, was so shocked that he recovered a large measure of speech. Peachey visited a shipping office, satisfied it of his bona tides and drew his wages, also £l4 salvage reward for towing a disabled American ship to port. Peachey is now claiming the renewal of his army pension. _____
