HEMP MARKET.

SEPTEMBER GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow, and stripper slips for the month of September have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: —

Twenty-three bales at Auckland, 139 at Wellington and 52 at Foxton were rejected. One bale at Wellington was condemned. The number of bales in each grade was as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Good fair 136 (41), high fail’ 1081 (1426), low fair 731 (3989), common 232 (658), rejected 214 (205), condemned 1 (nil), a total of 2395 bales as against 6319 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 3924 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 781, Wellington 766, Foxton 378, Bluff 470. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded: —

Eighteen bales at Auckland, and three at Wellington were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of fast year being given in parenthesis: — Ist grade 54 (64), 2nd grade 285 (1086), 3rd grade 154 (316), condemned 21 (61), a total of 514 bales as against 1527 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 1013 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 212, Wellington 129, Foxton 24, Bluff 149. Stripper Tow. —Ten bales were graded Ist grade, and 80 bales were graded 2nd grade, at Foxton. A total of 90 bales, as against 162 bales graded the same period last year, showing a decrease of 72 bales.

Stripper Slips.—Seven bales at Auckland were graded 2nd grade. One bale at the Bluff was condemned. Two bales at Auckland, and 37 at the Bluff, were passed for export. The total number graded was 47 bales, as against 163 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 116 bales.
