FIRE ON WHIROKINO ROAD.
BUCKET BRIGADE DOES GOOD WORK. Shortly after 10 o’clock yesterday morning a fire broke out in Mr. F. Woods five-roomed cottage situated on the Whirokino Road, just past No. 2 Line. The cause of the outbreak is a mystery, hut it appears as if it might have been caused by a short circuit of the electric wires as the fire occurred in a spare room. The flames quickly spread injo the two front rooms, but a bucket brigade did marvellous work and subdued the outbreak before any extensive damage was done to the dwelling. Messrs G. Wjoods and G. Sutherland have been baching in the house and at the time of the fire Air. Sutherland was chopping wood at the rear of the building, but Mr,’ Woods was away in town. Mr. Speirs and three men engaged in sinking a bore on Mr. Speirs’ farm on the opposite side of the road, saw smoke issuing from the house and rushed over. A bucket brigade was inaugurated and the five men, after strenuous efforts, subdued the outbreak.
The windows of the two front rooms were broken by the heat and the walls charred. The save was remarkable.
The building was covered by insurance but the furniture was not insured.
