NEW AIRCRAFT ENGINE.

OIL-BURNING DIESEL TYPE. TEST FLIGHT IN AMERICA. New York, Sept. 20. A Detroit motor firm announces that it has made what is believed to be a revolutionary step in the development of aircraft power. A successful test was made of an airplane driven by an oil-burning motor. This is the first Diesel type of aircraft engine ever built. The test flight was made with a Stinson Detroiter monoplane. The motor is of the radial air-cooled type and develops 200 horse power on the Diesel principle. The use of oil fuel eliminates petrol ignition systems and spark plugs, and also removes the danger of fire from the petrol and reduces consumption and fuel costs. The claim is made that the new motor will carry a ’plane 25 per cent, farther with the same weight of oil fuel, compared with petrol.
