MAIN HIGHWAYS.
The Main Highways Board held its monthly meeting at Wellington last week, Mr. F. W. Fifc’kert, C.M.G., presiding. In connection with the re-erec-tion of the Aorangi Bridge at Feilding, the board decided to subsidise expenditure up to £IO,OOO on a basis of £2 for £1 and all expenditure in excess of £IO,OOO on a basis of £3 for £l. The matter is now being referred back to the local authorities, and, failing agreement as to allocation, the board will take steps to set up a commission.
The following were amongst the more important local works carried out during the month of August: — Turakina River Bridge: Good progress has been made with the erection of this bridge. Rangitikei River bridge: The repairs to this bridge have been completed. Pahautanui deviation: Good progress lias been made with the formation of this deviation. Paekakariki to W'aikanae: Improvements to formation at McKay’s Crossing are nearing completion. Levin to Palmerston North, via Shannon. —Keeble’s bridge: The formation of approaches to this bridge is in hand. Foxton - Shannon. — Manawatu River bridge: Good progress has been made with the metalling on the approach road to this bridge from the Foxton end. Mangore Stream bridge: The construction of this bridge has been completed.
Sanson - Palmerston North. — Awahuri to Palmerston North borough boundary; 31 miles of 24-foot formation is practically completed, and the metalling s in progress.
