Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, SEPT. 22, 1928. ALLEGED VICTIMISATION.
WILD rumours were floating round the town yesterday to the effect that by reason of two flaxworkers being allegedly victimised for participation on behalf of the Flaxmills Employees’ Union in the conference recently convened by the Prime Minister, that a strike of flaxworkers would follow. We do not believe that such drastic action is contemplated by the workers. We are not, however, in possession of the facts concerning the grievance, but in view of the small attendance of workers at the meeting held last night to discuss the subject apparently the majority do not view the matter very seriously. In any case, before a cessation of work is contemplated a secret ballot would have to be taken. Now that a mutually satisfactory arrangement has been arrived at between the parties which has enabled the men to settle down to work again after months of idleness, it would be disastrous to allow anything to upset matters. We are not in possession of the facts which have given rise to the convening of last night’s meeting, but surely they could be satisfactorily adjusted without resorting to extreme measures. Both millers and men have made sacrifices to continue operations, and to allow anything to disturb the agreement arrived at should be avoided.
