SUMMER TIME BILL.
LIKELY TO BE DROPPED. In view’ of the report which the Special Committee brought in on the Summer Time (Local Empowering) Bill, Mr. T. K. Sidey has decided that he cannot ask the Government to provide facilities for bringing the Bill before the House again. Mr. Sidey announced his decision to this effect last night; but he related that he would not go to the length of having the Bill removed from the Order Paper. In the circumstances, although the Bill still stands for committal, ij: is unlikely that it will be heard of again this session. MR. LINKLATER’S OPINIONS. Reference was made by Mr. J. Linklater, M.P., in his speech at the Spring Flower Show’ at Levin on Tuesday, to the defeat in the House this session of the Summer Time Bill, and Mr. Sidey’s move in bringing down a bill w’hich would empower county councils or borough councils to bring in daylight saving iii their respective areas. “I look upon this Bill,” said Mr. Linklater, “with the heartiest disapproval, although I may be blamed for taking up what might be termed a dog-in-the-manger attitude. But I suggest that nothing but chaos will result if the towns in New Zealand adopt daylight saving and the country does not. It appears to me an attempt to force on the country daylight saving, whether the country districts wish it or not. There is no doubt, that the large towns will adopt daylight saving, and it is impossible to have two different times in a Dominion w’here the country and the towns’ business is so closely interwoven. Anyhow the onus will rest on the shoulders of the borough and country councillors, asd \ do not envy them their responsibilities.”
