Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, SEPT. 13, 1928. HOSPITAL CONTROL.
NONE of the contributing local bodies to the Palmerston District Hospital, other than the Palmerston Borough Council, were represented at the deputation to the Minister of Health at Wellington to-day. The subject to be discussed with the Minister is in desirability of a more equitable system of levy—if such can be found—and to suggest that local bodies should have direct representation on hospital boards instead of being elected by the people. It goes without saying that the latter request will not meet with much sympathy from this or any other Government. The finest compliment that could be paid to the Palmerston Hospital Board’s administration in connection with the Palmerston N. Borough Council’s “stir up” is the fact that none of the contributing bodies have cooperated with the Palmerston Borough Council in their agitation of discontent..
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council a resolution was carried to the effect that hospital charges should be increased to the actual cost per day per patient for those in a position to pay. In carrying that resolution, the County Council could not have been aware of the fact that at the last meeting of the Hospital Board the fees were raised from 9/- per day to 12/- per day. This is as far as the Board could reasonably go in view of the fact that medical men are giving their services free to the institution. It will be time enough to consider a further increase when the appointment of a stipendiary medical staff is under consideration.
