NEWS AND NOTES.

Nine years ago the Waipukurau Borough Council purchased a draught gelding for £4B, whilst a year later another draught marc was secured for £42. Owing to the council purchasing a motor truck, these two horses were sold this week at Waipukurau, each realise ing £3B. 'The stability of the market for this class of horse can be judged by the excellent price obtained after so many years of service, says the Napier Telegraph. A shooting party recently went deer stalking over the Blue Mountains (says the Southland Times). Game was fairly plentiful but wild, a large herd of deer was seen but too far away for a successful shot. Late in the afternoon the party witnessed an unusual sight. M?. C. Gregory took a successful shot at the head of a deer, and on the members of the party going to claim their prize great was their surprise to find that the marksman had shot not onlv his deer, but another one as well. The bullet had passed

through the eye of the first deer and through- the neck of another standing immediately behind it. Both were killed outright, and thus (he party found themselves with two hinds of excellent size and condition. 'This is a happening experienced by very few sportsmen. “How many tobacco pipes do you keep in use?” The writer knows a man who has 31 and smokes them all, turn about! Rather a lot? But it certainly is a good plan to have a few pipes going instead of smoking the same one continuously. More important still is the tobacco. Let it be good, and avoid brands heavily charged with nicotine. Any doctor will tell you their habitual use is injurious, and it cannot be gain-said that the imported brands all contain more nicotine than can be safely absorbed into the system. The purest tobacco of . all are the New Zealand ones. There’s surprisingly little nicotine in them, which means they can be indulged in with the utmost impunity. Their fine aroma and exquisite flavour are largely due to the fact that the leaf is toasted in the process of manufacture. These qualities it is that differentiates them from all other tobaccos. You can get them in any strength. Ask your tobacconist for “Riverhead Gold” mild, “Navy Cut” (Bulldog) medium, or “Cut Plug No. 10” (Bullshead) full strength.
