RE-OPENING OF THE FLAXMILLS.
Within a day or so Foxton residents should agai# hear the winning chorus of the strippers as most of the mills will be commencing operations at the beginning of next week. The big mill at Miranui has already started work and \\ hitnunui is ready to follow suit as soon as flax is available. The heavy rain on Tuesday prevented the cutters and trammers from going into the swamps, but if the present fine weather continues, work should go on uninterruptedly. Messrs Ross, Rough ami Co’s, mill will start work to-morrow and most of the mills along the ri\eibank should follow suit by Monday. Messrs King and Co., and McCarthy’s mills have been operating practically throughout the wintei. It is understood that Poplar will not mill for any length of time this season.
In conversation with one of the local millers, our representative was informed that the flax had not suffered in any way as a result of the spell, but rather had derived benefit from the period of enforced idleness at the mills.
