THE GOLD DIGGINGS MURDER.
TRIAL OF BARDIE COMMENCED. Naseby, Last Night. The preliminary hearing of a charge against William John Hardie, a young man of 23 years, of murdering Joe Leung Shum at the Kyeburn diggings on July 17 was begun before Mr. H. J. Dixon, S.M., here to-day. Mi 7 . F. B. Adams, appeared for the Crown and Mr. A. C. Hanlon for the defence. Local interest was intense and Hardie paid the full price of notoriety, being subjected to the cynosure of curious crowds at the railway station and Court House. The Byo principal witnesses, Dr. W. S. Eudey and Sue Pee, a Chinese employee of Shum were heard this afternoon. Sue Pee was in the box for two and a half hours as an interpreter was necessary. The doctor gave evidence that five bullet wounds were suffered by Shum and Sue Pee deposed to having seen accused on the claim on ’ the day of the murder and also that Shum had told him who had killed him. The hearing has not yet been completed.
