WOMEN CIGARETTE SMOKERS.
BREAK UP THE CHOCOLATE TRUST. A London cable message states that cigarette smoking among women has broken up the powerful British cocoa pool, which dominated the cocoa situation in the world. The crisis is not only felt in Europe and America, but in thousands of native villages on the Gold Coast and elsewhere. Authorities in the trade in London assert that women are 5 buyingcigarettes instead of chocolates and men are presenting cigarette cabinets, in place of chocolate boxes. Practically the entire cocoa industry depends on chocolates and only an unlikely change in feminine tastes and fashion can avert a crisis. The report of the impendingbreak up of the cocoa pool created a sensation on the New York Exchange, where prices slumped alarmingly. London experts say a world slump is inevitable. Women’s fashions have already shattered fortunes in the woollen trade and established artificial silk millionaires instead. Opinions may differ as to the harmful physiological effects of cigarette smoking on women, but the habit is increasing and some day we will probably see the picture advertisement of a mother with baby in arms and a cigarette in her mouth acclaiming the visitors of a certain, brand.
