BLENDING OF MAORI RACE.

NATIVE NAMES DISAPPEAR. A prophecy by Captain PittRivers, the ethnologist, that in two generations not a single pure-blood-ed Maori would be left was mentioned by Sir Apirana Ngata in his address at Auckland this week. The speaker said most people would question the assertion, but he had made a survey of the people living within miles of his own home on the East Coast, and he could name only about 60 without European blood in their veins. The district contained specimens of a unique hybrid, the Por-tuguese-Maori. Both should be worthy of scientific study . Maori names in his district were steadily being replaced by European . The native owners of one block of land at Mohaka were nearly all called O’Keefe, Hawkins and Hodgkins.
