N.Z. FLAXMILLERS’ ASSOCIATION.

CONFERENCE PROPOSALS DISCUSSED. A well-attended meeting of members of the New Zealand Flaxmillers’ Association was held at Foxton on Thursday afternoon, presided over by Mr. C. H. Speirs (president). The chairman reported upon the conference held at Wellington on Wednesday between delegates from the Association and Union and convened by the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) and submitted the proposals of the Prime Minister. Mr. J. G. Collins, secretary of the Industries and Commerce Department, was also in attendance at the request of the Prime Minister, and explained to the meeting the Prime Minister’s proposals. After a lengthy discussion the agreement arrived at by the meeting. PRIME MINISTER’S PROPOSALS The Prime Minister’s proposals to both parties are as follows: — “That we, representing the flaxmill owners and the flaxmill workers, agree to a settlement of the present dispute obtaining in the industry on the following basis: — 1. A wage reduction of 10 per cent, on present award wages based on the average value of flax at £24 10s.

2. Wages to be increased to award rates when flax reaches the average price of £27 10s. “It is agreed that an investigation shall be made into the trading accounts and last year’s balancesheets by the Department of Industries and Commerce and that the position regarding a sliding scale of wages shall be reviewed after the investigation has been completed.”

If the flaxmills workers agree to the proposals submitted at the conference convened by the Prime Minister, the mills will be opened immediately. The millers have already agreed to the proposals. A well-attended meeting of members of the Flaxmills Employees’ Union was held in the Town Hall supper-room last night, when the secretary (Mr. P. T. Robinson) outlined the result of the conference, convened by the Prime Minister. A further meeting of the workers will be held at Shannon today. If the Union agrees to the proposals outlined above, the mills will be re-opened immediately.
