THE POLICE FORCE.
TO RECEIVE INCREASE IN PAY.
An increase of one shilling a day in the pay of sergeants and constables in all branches of the Police Force of the Dominion has been decided upon by Cabinet. In making an announcement to the above effect, the Minister of Justice (Hon. F. J. Rolleston) stated that the allowances to all ranks iu -the detective branch had now been placed on an equal scale of three shillings per day. Actingdetectives would receive an allowance of 1/6 per day, and plain clothes constables in the Detective Office one shilling per day in lieu of uniform. That increase was necessary to retain in and attract to the force men with the high qualifications necessary for the position; and it might also be taken as a recognition of the good work done for the community by those now in the service. An increase would also be made to superintendents, inspectors, and sub-inspectors. “The question of amending the law in regard to superannuation, as it affects the police force,” the Minister added, “is also under consideration by Cabinet.”
