£4OO DISCOVERED IN OLD CLOTHES.
DECEASED SOLDIER’S MONEY. Dunedin, August 24. The fact that honesty is by no means a lost virture was forcibly brought to the notice of the secretary of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr. J. M. White, yesterday, when he was handed tlio sum of £4OO, the property of a deceased returned soldier, which was previously not known to be in existence. The ex-soldier, who had had no near relatives in Dunedin, had been in lodgings in Dunedin. The usual procedure on death in like cases has been for the secretary of the association to hand over the deceased’s estate to the Public Trustee for administration, hut in this case the matter -was held over on account of information that deceased had no property other than a tin case, which had been handed to his relatives. Permission was, therefore, given the woman of the house at which the man had been boarding to burn all his old clothes.
On going through the clothing the woman discovered £4OO, £IOO of which was in notes. She immediately took the money to Mr. White, who handed it to the Public Trustee for safe keeping.
