(To the Editor). Sir, —I quite agree with your correspondent “Buick” re the necessity for completing the Levin-Foxton highway to the Manawatu boundary, i.e., the Wfhirokino bridge. The bend on the road where the fatal accident occurred recently requires immediate attention. This is one of the most dangerous corners between Wellington and Wanganui and its improvement does not present any serious difficulties nor would it be very costly as the formation is sand and the spoil could be used for filling adjacent depressions. Your correspondent gets a quiet dig at the Horowhenua County Council, but, sir, can the Manawatu County show anything like the same enterprise and results on improved highways as Horowhenua, and can he say that the highway between Levin and Foxton is comparable with the Foxton-Sanson highway. In any case, sir, the Horowhenua County lost no time on a £ for £ basis in getting to work while the Manawatu County hung off for a more generous subsidy although they had authority to uplift •loan money for improving their highways. May I presume to ask, sir, what the Manawatu County Council intend to do in respect of the proposed deviation near the big drain and when they intend to remove the dangerous bridge over same. I don’t think “Buick” need worry about Palmerston influence pushing on the Levin-Shannon-Palmerston highway. We can do without such influence, but this highway serves a large number of our ratepayers. On the whole, sir, the Horowhenua County Council have shown the way in progressive highway. works and if they get a fair deal from the Highways Board and Government it will not be long before the whole of its arterial roads are permanently laid down. Yours etc., HOROWHENUA.
