MAIN HIGHWAYS.
COUNTY CHAIRMAN INTERVIEWS HIGHWAY BOARD.
Mr. W. E. Barber chairman of the Manqwatu County Council, interviewed the Highways Board at Wellington this week and discussed the necessity Cor prompt action in connection with certain main highways under the jurisdiction of the Manawatu County Council. The Board agreed to a subsidy of £3 to £1 on the Sanson-Awahuri road, upon which there was some difference of opinion as to whether it would come within the increased subsidy area. It was pointed out by Mr. Barber that the highway in question was an arterial road leading from Palmerston. Authority was given to permit the preparation work being gone on with immediately.
A subsidy of £3 to £1 was also authorised in connection with the highway between the Himatangi corner and Rangiotu and this workwill be commenced at an early date.
A subsidy of £2 for £1 has been granted for the Foxton to Himatangi highway and this work is being proceeded with. Mr. Barber pointed out to the Board that the holding up of this work would result in a number of men being out of employment.
The result of his visit will mean that the work on the highways will now proceed without delay.
