INCREASED REVENUE.

FIGURES FOR PAST QUARTER. Wjellington, August G. The public accounts of the quarter ended June 30 appear in a special Gazette this week. The following summary of the transactions in the ordinary revenue account (Consolidated Fund) has been issued by the Minister of Finance: — REVENUE. The total revenue received for the period amounted to £4,167,937 as compared with £4,074,260 for the previous year after allowing for the, separation of the Post and Telegraph accounts, an increase. of £93,677. The principal increases ere as follows.:— Motor vehicles’ duties, licenses, etc., £417,869 (new item consequent on the passing of the Motor Spirits Taxation Act, 1927, and section 24 of the Finance Act, 1927. This increase will be offset by the increase in the expenditure under the special Acts when the receipts are allocated). Stamp and death duties, £31,484. Interest on capital liability > of Post and Telegraph Department, £72,000 (new item consequent on the passing of the Post and Telegraph Amendment Act, 1927, which came into force on April 1,1928). Miscellaneous, £30,367. Departmental receipts, £39,461. The principal decreases are: — Customs, £518,289. Income tax, £24,617. EXPENDITURE. The expenditure for the three months was as fallows: — Permanent appropriations, £4,091,737. Annual appropriations, £1,631,098. Total, £5,722,835 as compared with (after allowing for separation of Post and Telegraph accounts): — Permanent appropriations, £4,005,076. Annual appropriations, £1,640,435. Total, £5,645,511, during the corresponding period of last year, an increase of £77,324, made up as follows : Permanent appropriations, £86,661, increase; annual appropriations, £9337, decrease; total, £77,324, increase. Under the permanent appropriations the principal increases are: Special Acts £252,604, while there is a decrease of £174,681 in interest, due to the greater recoupments from other accounts. The increase of £252,604 in the special Acts is mainly due to the following: Family Allowances Act, 1926, £7000; Finance Act, 1927, £195,600; transfer to main highways account of tyre tax and fees and fines under Motor Vehicles Act (new item); losses on isolated sections and branch lines of railway, £25,500; Motor Spirits Taxation 'Act, 1927, £10,200; proportion of tax on motor spirits payable to boroughs (new item); war pensions, £28,100.
