LORRY CAPSIZES AT WHIROKINO BEND.
ONE MAN KILLED AND ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED. The dangerous bend about half a-mile past the Whirokino bridge on the Levin side of the FoxtonLevin highway was the scene of a fatal accident at about 11 o’clock this morning, when a lorry containing five occupants overturned, resulting in the death of one man and another receiving internal injuries. On taking the turn round the bluff the accelerator jammed and the lorry swerved and capsized o'Ver the bank, a drop of about 10 feet. The name of the person killed is John Smart, bricklayer, married, aged 40 years, of Taka Road, Taihape. Charles Harding, labourer, 35 years, married, of Moa Street, Taihape received serious internal injuries.
The other occupants of the lorry were: Thomas Slade, driver, Albert Robertson and Fred Chippendale. The deceased and Harding were riding behind the cab of the lorry, the other three occupants were inside the call.
It appears that Messrs Robertson and Slade are builders of Tailiape and they left Tailiape with their employees at 5.30 this morning for Wellington to undertake work there. Constables Owen and Bell of Foxton and Constables Bagrie and Cosgrove of Levin proceeded to the scene of the accident accompanied by Drs. Thompson and Hunter, also of Levin.
The lorry was loaded with building material, etc. The ambulance arrived and conveyed the injured man to the Palmerston hospital, • the body of the deceased being taken to Levin. An inquest will lie held at Levin this afternoon.
