CORRESPONDENCE.
(To the Editor)
Sir, —In respect to the article rein the Herald of Tuesday re the Wellington to Wanganui highway, it seems to me that there is a good deal of truth in what “Austin” says, anyway the result of the outlay on the road via Shannon is that a large number of the service cars will go that way instead of via Foxton. I wonder if you often travel along the road between Levin and Foxton. I think it is a most dangerous piece of road; the formation is the surface rough, and the metal like a river-bed, and there are several very bad corners that should have been improved out of existence long ago. I have no hesitation in saying that 'if the public interest had been considered, the road between Levin and Foxton should have been bitumized before the Shannon road was begun. I understand the Manawatu County Council intend bitumizing from the Foxton racecourse to Sandon almost at once, then the Rangitikei Council are doing the same from Bulls to Marton Station, so that if Horowhenua had improved the portion between the Whirokino Bridge and Levin, then all the through traffic would pass through Foxton. This would benefit the town in many ways. It appears to me that Whirokino riding representative on the Horowhenua County has not been as energetic in attending, to the Levin-Foxton highway as he might have been. Yours, etc., WHIROKINO.
