ALL BLACKS DEFEAT FREE
STATE.
BY 15 POINTS TO 11
In a rather uninteresting game at Bloemfonteim on Saturday, before a crowd of 7,000 and in brilliant sunshine in which the winners played one man short in the second spell, the New Zealanders defeated Orange Free State by 15 points to 11. The teams were as follows:
Orange Free State.—Full-back: Duplessis; three-cpiarters: Tromp, Vanderpost, Wansbury, Coetzor; halves: Zeeman, Fischer; forwards: Basson, Potgieter, Visser, Henze, Rest, Qouldie, Fitchat, and Vanderlinde.
New Zealand. —Full-back: Lilburne; three-quarters: Rushbrook, Sheen, Lucas; five-eighths: Strang, Johnson; half-back: Dailey; wingforward: Scrimshaw; forwards. Hore, Swain, M. Brownlie, Alley, C. Brownlie, W ard, Snow. , The side was regarded as stronger than that which last played against the All Blacks. The All Black forwards showed cohesion, and swept the ball the length of the field, and Dailey from a line-out cut clean through the backs in front of him and scored near the posts. Strang converted. New Zealand s—Free State 0. A. scrum followed a kick to the twenty-five yards line, and from loose play a Free State forward kicked the ball over the line. Potgieter raced up and secured it, and also kicked the goal. New Zealand s—Free State 5. Scores were even in the first half. In the second spell Free State backs attacked from the first scrum. Tromp being soundly pulled down by Lilburne within inches of the line. The Free State players, however, were first to score again, Potgieter landing a goal from a penalty. Free State B—New Zealand 5. The New Zealand forwards then started serious packing. C. Brownlie and Ward led off with' a clever dribbling movement, and a scrum followed. Dailey worked the blind side and the ball was handled in turn by Johnson, Strang, and Scrimshaw, who fell over as he scored a good try. Strang kicked a fine goal from a difficult angle. New Zealand 10—Free State 8. A few minut.es later the All Black backs were again sent away by Dailey from a scrum. Lucas sidestepped his man and Strang came round for a pass and handed to Scrimshaw, who got over near the posts. It was a pretty piece of combination which deserved success. Strang again converted. New Zealand 15 —Free State 8. t The Free State forwards worked hard for a recovery. The backs made several good runs, Coetzer cutting in on one occasion and reaching at full-back before lie was tackled. The New Zealand back's, however, were not idle, and made thrust after thrust on their own account. They were showing improvement, with Lucas at centre, and took play to the Free State twenty-five, but a penalty stopped their advance. A good broak-away by the State forwards, led by Basson, Potgieter, and Visser, removed play to the New Zealand twenty-five. Here M. Brownlie was penalised for off-side in front, of the posts, but Potgieter missed an easy kick. A minute or two before time the Free State backs opened out with a beautiful movement, which ended in Tromp scoring the best try of the match. Potgieter again missed. New Zealand 15—Free State 11.
There was one fine run by the All Black backs before the end, in which Scrimshaw, was within an inch' of the line. Lucas picked up and sent Strang over, only to be penalised for using hands in the scrum. M \NAWHENUA REPRESENTATIVES.
