“EVILS” OF SUMMER TIME

Mr. Lysnar’s speech against the Summer Time Bill in the House of Representatives on Wednesday night was punctuated by some amusing passages.

After declaring that summer time had been responsible for a drop in the productivity of fowls, a burst of earnestness caused Mr. Lysnar to refer to the difficulty of “milking the cream,” and after the laughter had died down he painted a gloomy picture of three children on a, horse “chewing a hunk of bread on their way to school because they had to milk the cows in the dark and did not have time to have breakfast.”

This caused a fresh outburst of merriment, which prompted Mr. Lysnar to remark that “if some of those honourable gentlemen had to get up in the dark and go to bed in the daylight they would not have such lively countenances when considering a matter of that kind.” Mr. J. S. Dickson (Parnell): “What time do you get up?” Mr. Lysnar did not satisfy Mr. Dickson’s curiosity, but went on to say that he knew a woman in Wellington who would have nothing of summer time. “She used to put the dinner aside for her husband when he came home from bowls,” said Mr. Lysnar, “and-he had to go and get it in the oven.” (Laughter). Voices: “Is he still alive?”
