FOXTON SENIORS v. WANDERERS. A well contested game between Foxton and Wanderers was witnessed on the Levin Park Domain on Saturday. Wjanderers kicked off, and Foxton returned play with the help of a run by Robinson, who repeated the performance after the blacks had made a brief incursion. The home team gained relief through punting, and Tatana with a penalty kick carried play on to the visitors’ twenty-five. The Foxton forwards were on the alert and a strong passing movement enabled them to reach their opponents’ quarter, where the blacks were held for some time. The first score came to Foxton when, following a scrum, Robinson iefeverlly potted a goal from the twenty-five. Foxton 4 Wanderers 0.
■Shortly after the resumption a free kick was awarded to the blacks at about half-way, in front of the goal, but no score came of it. Wanderers followed up with a determined attack, and from a scramble on the corner T. Parata grounded the ball. McDonell kicked a difficult goal. Wanderers 5 Foxton 4.
A whirlwind movement took the visitors’ forwards near to the blacks’ line, which was saved by a mark. A scrum resulted advantageously to the home team ,and by means of a forward rush they soon had the yellows defending. Play was gradually worked back to midfield, where it hovered for a while indecisively, until a mark by J. Parata was the means of leading his side to a fresh onslaught. A free kick at the goal was taken at the twenty-five, but was profitless. Foxton freed themselves and had another turn at attacking, which did not last long. The blacks, whose forwards were working well together, reached a position near the line, where a scrum ensued and in the resultant scramble Nuthall gained possession and touched down. Tatana was unsuccessful with the kick from the extreme angle. Wanderers B—Foxton8 —Foxton 4.
In a little while Foxton were awarded a free kick from a sharp angle, but the ball fell just short of the goal. Wanderers soon returned to the attack and reached a handy position, but from a lineout the ball went to the yellows. The home team renewed the pressure, but had to fall back to halfway, from which Westwood, the visitors’ centre three-quarter, put in a good sprint with the ball till he was tackled near the twenty-five. A penalty came Foxton’s way, and with the kick Taylor landed a nice goal. Wanderers B—Foxton8 —Foxton 7. 'Early in the second spell a free kick was awarded to Foxton, and Taylor had a shot, with a result not ofte;i seen, the ball hitting the cross-bar and dropping back. After a loose attack by the visiting forwards, Robinson got away with the ball at his toe, overtook and picked it up, and, beating two opposing players, scored a try in solo fashion at the corner. Taylor’s kick just missed the goal. Foxton 10 —Wanderers 8.
The home team were put in the lead again by means of a free kick, Udy getting the goal. Wanderers 11 —Foxton 10.
It was not long before Foxton were attempting the same performance, but without success. They put up a strong attack, and were given another chance at the goal, but again without result. Tatana relieved to half-way, and then took play on to .the twenty-five. The reply was a dribbling rush by Foxton, which might have ended in a score, but .for a knock-on. The blacks were kept on the defensive, and, from an opening by Moses, C. Procter crossed the line with little opposition and ran round to score about 10 yards in. Taylor converted the try. Foxton 15 —Wanderers 11.
In the course of the remainder of the play, of which the teams had fairly equal shares, there was a stoppage due to Procter being dum# ped heavily while in possession of the ball. After a few minutes he recovered his wind and was able to resume. Williams, Wanderers’ light wing three-quarter, showed up to advantage in several sprints. Generally there was nobody handy to take the ball when he was tackled, but in the end he got going with a fairly clear way open to the line. It appeared as though a free kick was awarded his side for obstruction, but the ruling was a penalty try to Williams, and the kick by McDonell was an attempt at conversion, which missed by an ex-
tremely narrow margin. The game epded just afterwards, with the scores: Foxton 15 —Wjanderers 14. Mr. R. Sands was referee. THIRD GRADE MATCH. . WANDERERS (5) v. FOXTON ' (NIL.) # In the third grade match, played on the local racecourse on Saturday between Foxton and Wanderers, the latter won by a converted try to nil. The game was a very ragged exposition and the Foxton team deserved to lose by a wider margin. They seemed to be carrying too many passengers, and in the second half missed opportunities to score time and again. Their tackling was decidedly faulty and their passing erratic. Wanderers did most of the attacking in the first spell, and shortly after resuming in the second the Jones brothers handled and D. Jones crossed and H. Jones added the major points. Foxton had Wjanderers penned in for some time and a series of scrums on their goal line ended fruitlessly, and Huff missed some easy shots at goal. Newson, Hartley and Simpson were within an ace of scoring. Hartley got through but had no one to accept his pass when tackled. Smith could not do anything' right aptl indulged in too much talking. Ohrvstall never missed a' tackle. Mr. Neville controlled the game.
SCHOOLS FOOTBALL
AUSTIN BANNER WON BY LEVIN.
The match played between the Levin and Shannon primary school Rugby teams at Shannon on Saturday morning, proved to be the deciding one in the Austin Banner competition, Levin winning the game by eight points to nil. The contest afforded a fine exposition of juvenile football. In the first spell there was no score, but Levin for a good deal of the time had their opponetns confined to their own twenty-five. Shannon nevertheless put up a creditable defence. The second half was fairly spectacular. The first score was registered by Kingsbeer, who picked up the leather just over the twenty-five, beat all the opposition and touched down. He converted his own try. The tally was increased by Blenkhorn, who crossed over from a scramble near the line. Although the win was a welldeserved one, it must be said that the Shannon team were somewhat the lighter of the two and made a commendable stand. The game was refereed by Mr. Mabey. Last year Levin defeated Shannon by 10 points to six, but Foxton had already won the Banner in that year and had been the holders for several years. An interesting stage was reached this season, as last Saturday the Levin team, by defeating Foxton, obtained a lead of two points over, that team in the aggregate. Having been drawn to play Shannon on Saturday, Levin had two chances left; a win would give them the trophy, while in the event of their»losing they would have had another match to play against Foxton. Steveuson’s acceptance of a position in the Senior team precludes him from again playing for the Foxton Juniors. It is a pity he did not signify his acceptance of the position until after the Junior Trial game last Saturday as by playing in that match he debarred Huff from a possible inclusion in the Junior rep. team.
