RUGBY FOOTBALL
.BEBBINGTON SHIELD MATCH
The Bush Rugby Union has written the Horowhenua Rugby Council, confirming 25th July as date for Bebbington Shield. The, team will arrive in Levin about 12.30 on Wednesday, leaving again after dinner at night. The final selection of their team will be made after the Bush v. Wanganui game to be played at Wanganui on Saturday next 21st. The game this year should be one of the keenest and most exciting one played between Horowhenua and Bush. Bush will be playing their fourth representative game and Horowhenua players have had just sufficient representative football to bring them to the top of their form. All our players will be taking part in Club football on Saturday enabling them to feel themselves for the serious try out on Wednesday. On form shown next week will depend the chances our players have for inclusion in Manawhenua reps, for the Southern tour. The record to date‘in these games is Bush two wins, Horowlienua two wins, while one game was drawn. The New Zealand Referees’ Association will appoint a referee to control the game. The selection of referees by this body has given the utmost satisfaction to players and public, who can be assured that a very interesting game will be staged on Wednesday next.

The following reply is reported to have been sent by two prominent members of the Wairarapa Rugby team to the Mayor of Masterton: “Will willingly drop Shield overboard if round your neck.” Mr. J. Jordan, Mayor of Masterton, in sending a telegram to the Wairarapa team congratulating them on winning the • Ranfurly Shield from Canterbury, made the suggestion that the shield should be dropped overboard on the trip to Wellington. The second, test match between New Zealand and South Africa, which will be played at Johannesburg to-day, will go down in history as one of the most important Rugby tussles in the annals of the game. Not only will it be a trial of wits and stamina between the manhood of two virile nations, but two vastly differing styles of play will be on their trial. The result will be awaited with interest.
