MY HOME TOWN FIRST
* The Wairarapa (Greytown) Standard has a just grievance against its Borough Council for sending its orders for printing outside the town, and asks the Council the following pertinent questions: “Dp these outside firms pay any local rates? Do any of their employees pay local rates? How much a year do these outside firms, their staffs or their families. spend on Municipal gas? Do any of these outside firms, their staffs or their families, do business with local tradesmen, who are big ratepayers? If the Borough Councillors, who are simply trustees for the ratepayers, fail to set an example of loyalty to local institutions, then they connive in a system that cannot help but spell stagnation.” We suggest that the “Standard” submit the following home town creed to its Council: — I buy at home:
—because my interests are here. —because the community that'ls good enough for me to live in is good enough for me to buy in.
—because I believe in transacting business with my friends. —because every pound I spend at home works for the community in which I live. —because the man I buy from stands back of the goods. —localise here I live and here I buy. —because the man I buy from pays his part of the town rates and taxes. —because the man I buy from helps support my school, my lodge, my church, my home. —because when ill luck, misfortune or bereavement comes, the man I buy from is here with his kindly greeting, his wgrds of cheer and his pocket book if need be.
